World Series Final Game Captures Over 50 Million Viewers In the US, Canada and Japanese Markets.

The exciting extra-inning clash that saw the Los Angeles Dodgers overcome the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 drew a combined over 50 million watchers across the United States, Canada, and Japanese markets. Major League Baseball announced this represents the highest-rated World Series finale since the 1991 edition contest between the Minnesota Twins and Braves.

Broadcast Viewership Details

Last Saturday’s epic game drew 27.33 million viewers on Fox Sports networks, its Spanish-language channel and Fox’s streaming platforms. Per Nielsen, it was the second highest-rated program of the week.

It also stands as the top-rated Fall Classic matchup since the 2017 final game between the Dodgers and Houston Astros, which drew 29.07 million. This represents a 16% increase compared to the last finale featuring the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros, which drew 23.19 million.

In the weekly rankings, the sixth game ranked fourth, Game 4 ranked seventh, the fifth game was 8th, and Game 3 landed in thirteenth place.

Global Viewership Figures

In Canada, the climactic game recorded 11.6M watchers on Sportsnet and the French TVA Sports channel. This was the most-watched English-language program in Canada after the 2010 edition Winter Olympics.

In Japan, where the final contest started at 9 p.m. local time, it attracted 12 million viewers. This followed last Friday’s Game 6 – in which Fall Classic Most Valuable Player Yamamoto gave up a single run in six innings – recorded 13.1M viewers, making it the highest-rated World Series matchup on a sole broadcaster in Japan.

Series Totals and Trends

The full seven-game World Series averaged 15.71 million audience members on the Fox network, a 2% increase from last year’s Dodgers versus Yankees matchup. This represents the first time after 2015 and ‘16 that the Fall Classic has seen viewership increases for two consecutive seasons.

Counting the opening game broadcast on the Univision network, the total American average was over 16 million. The overall World Series viewership in the Japanese market was 9.7 million and 8.1 million in Canada.

The full playoffs on Fox, FS1 and FS2 drew over 8 million viewers, an 8% rise over the previous year and Fox’s best postseason performance after the 2017 season.

MLB reported that the World Series was broadcast in over 200 nations and regions by forty-four broadcasting partners in 16 different languages.
