Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels down to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."
In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
